When Using Non-Bass Equipment

Buying extra bass-specific equipment (microphones, amplifiers) is often too expensive for enthusiasts so they try to make the most out of using more general equipment. A word of warning: playing your bass through a standard guitar amplifier can break it, keeping the volume low is the safest way to try this (though it's still potentially dangerous) and will help to avoid distortion.

  • To mimic what a bass microphone does you could apply an equalizer? so that the high frequencies are entirely removed and only a little of the mid-frequencies remain. You'll have to experiment with the equalization as all microphones are different.
  • If you're keeping the volume low on a standard guitar amplifier you'll want the microphone to be as close as possible.
